Every 'test' takes place at some holiday or seasonal event-Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day-and despite the supposed lapse of time between events, Kobato does absolutely nothing. As the reader, I am forced to assume the homeless girl hibernates, since that's the only way she could so completely miss learning anything in the months that elapse. There's nothing to keep you coming back.
Kobato is a one-dimensional character in the traditional cute-dumb-girl vein (who has a SECRET and probably SAD PAST, OH NO), and Ioryogi has a temper that is permanently stuck on mad and abusive. What drivel is this? Kobato is a young-looking girl of indeterminate origin who has a wish to visit a place. In order to do so, she is set to a number of tasks by her mentor, a crotchety, verbally abusive, alcoholic magical stuffed dog named Ioryogi and scored on her performance and ability to use 'common sense.'

The only reason this got 2 stars was for the artwork. When random other fleeting characters have more personality than the two leading roles, I don't feel very involved or interested.
Kobato flounces around with a Ford Prefect-esque happy yet simple attitude and is constantly berated by Ioryogi. She doesn't learn anything. She doesn't mature. Ioryogi doesn't get any nicer, for the most part (poor puppy who just wants a beer), and their relationship doesn't change. I did enjoy the key at the end that explains some of the references and language used for those of us who are unfamiliar with Japanese language and culture. Beyond that, though, the story and characters didn't have much in terms of redeeming qualities.
I was immediately drawn to this manga out of a love for most things CLAMP (I must admit that there's a few of their stories that were just bland). While it was better than some of their other works such as Suki, it didn't capture me quite like some of their other works did.

What doesn't help is that she hasn't 'earned' this bottle yet & her guardian spirit (in the shape of a stuffed dog) seems to want to put her through many random tests in order to get her to qualify for this quest!
Overall I liked this story. The artwork is very nice & the characters are all pretty cute. Even most of the background characters are drawn to heavily resemble many of the characters of CLAMP's other works, which is nice from time to time. It's just that for the main part of this book, the story didn't seem to have any real focus to it. There's a few hints at future storylines, but for the most part the book is Kobato going about her tests, having cute misunderstandings due to her not being aware of common everyday things, as well as her guardian giving her a well-meaning scolding for said misunderstandings. I am glad to say that this does pick up in the next volume (so don't give up yet!), but this may put off many readers.
Having a fluffy plot works for some of CLAMP's other books such as Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, but for something like this that seems to hint at a deeper plot, I can't help but want a little more substance. So far I'm kind of torn as to whether or not to really start collecting this series. It's got great artwork & the characters are cute, but so far it isn't really inspiring me to collect them all. Die-hards of CLAMP will probably snap this up as soon as they see it, but others of us will probably sit back & wait to see if the series gets any better in the future.

Ngomong-ngomong secara keseluruhan. Saya menikmatinya kok. I picked this book up at the library on a whim because it looked cute, but honestly?
I had higher hopes. The story completely starts in the thick of things, which would be fine, but nothing ever really gets explained.
I get that her wish is supposed to be a secret, but who the hell is Ioryogi and how did Kobato meet him? Needless to say, I wanted to put it down after the first ten pages, but I stuck it out incase things would get better. They never did. Save yourself some time and don't read it. I did not want to like Kobato. It shouldn't work.
I caught myself laughing quite a bit while reading this volume. Whether it be at the absurdity of Kobato's decisions or at the situations she naturally found herself in. The dialogue is clunky but self-aware, and by the end I was having a lot of fun watching the characters' reactions. I recognized most of the cameos, and it was nice to see so many recurring faces from other works.

I even liked Kobato towards the end! Sure, we're not clear on her motivations or why she needs to go through these tests specifically (my bet's still on her being an alien), but she's so upbeat and adorable it's hard not to get swept along in her enthusiasm. You really just have to treat this as a less-serious Tsubasa: just embrace the absurdity and you'll have a good time.
It's not perfect by any means, but it's a lot of fun, and I'll be picking up the second volume soon just to see where all this craziness goes. I honestly don't know about this one. I have so many questions, questions that I don't think the authors intended, such as: Where do they live? It mentions them being homeless, but why? Where are they from?

Kalo gitu sih, gampang.tiap orang kan pasti punya masalah bener.tapi ternyata Kobato ga gampang nemuin orang yg punya kriteri itu. Apalagi Kobato sendiri polooooooos banget.
Sehari-hari dia dibantu Fujimoto-san, cowok pendiam tp sangat perhatian.
Komentar saya hanya satu: cobaaaaaaaa aja kalo Clamp bikin cerita terakhirnya nggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa diburu-buru.
Ganbarimasuuu. Anyone who has looked at my later reviews of this series will wonder why this volume has 4 stars but the others have 5. Anyone who has looked at my later reviews of this series will wonder why this volume has 4 stars but the others have 5. The reason is because this first volume has a very episodic feel, there was the undercurrent linking each episode, and Kobato was cute and Ioryogi hilarious (but brutal) but I wasn't deeply connecting to the story. Of course I had complete faith that CLAMP would pull it all together by the end. While the episodic feel did keep me a little distant from the heart of the story anyone unfamiliar with Japanese culture will be delighted to discover details of daily life in Japan, like taking out the trash, hanami, and more.
What is commonsense to the Japanese is slightly skewed in some situations to what is commonsense to those of us in 'the west'. As always with CLAMP books the art is gorgeous and detailed, you could spend days admiring some panels. Also, like a few of the more recent series you can keep an eye out for old friends from series past. Kobato is a character has that adorable, clumsy innocence that is a bit of a trope in manga, but she is so cute (and adorable dressed) that I imagine most people will over-look it (or like a lot of manga fans perhaps love her all the more for it). Ioryogi may look like a blue stuffed animal, but his impressive fire beam breath prooves rather effectively that his is not your average toy dog (like the walking and talking wasn't some hint). Both characters clearly have hidden pasts (which readers of CLAMP will know won't be fully revealed until the final volume), and the hints are tantalising enough to draw you to the next volume. I recommend this series for all CLAMP fans and any lovers of shojo manga or those keen to try out either (or both).
I have read some of CLAMP’s works and I loved them all so when I found about Kobato I immediately went out to buy it. Kobato did make me smile and laugh but I was expecting a bit more from it. Kobato and Ioryogi were both very quirky and loveable characters. Kobato wasdumb and silly but still very loveable.

The manga is mostly centered around Kobato learning more about the world around her(we do not know her origin) and trying to help people in order to obtain and fill up the “bottle”. She wants to fill this bottle so her wish will be granted.
Ioryogi has a very hot temper. He breathes fire.
Even though he does verbally abuse Kobato you can tell he still cares for her. I guess he is the tough love kind of person.
There is no romance between the two, just to let you know. Kobato and Ioryogi’s relationship is one of two friendskind of. The story is pretty peaceful for the most part. Kobato is a very cute character that put a smile on my face. Her adventures with Ioryogi around town were very funny. I really want to know more about Kobato’s origins because she is surely not from Earth.
I also want to learn more about Ioryogi and what awful thing he did in order to deserve such a punishment: being turned into a plush doll and sent to Earth. I could describe the art in this manga with four words: simply and utterly beautiful. CLAMP’s artwork is detailed, pretty, cute, and fun all at the same time. Kobato and all the other characters are beautifully drawn.
Sometimes I would stare at just one panel for a little while because the art was just so darn good. If you are familiar with CLAMP’s other works you will spot some characters that look very similar with the characters from them.
Kobato was a very cute and silly read and I look forward to the future volumes but I do think there could had been more story to it I give Kobato 3.5 out of 5. We knew she wasn't an ordinary girl and Ioryogi is way more than a stuffed animals. Well, we could questioned it later since Kobato and her cute-ness (or stupidity, according to Ioryogi) will entertain you. Plus, it's still an amazing artwork by CLAMP! It was as directionless as darling Kobato! But, having both to refer to (which, I suppose, is a drawback if you are a manga-only type person), I absolutely love this story. Final volume in June! But sorry, guys, it doesn't work! It's just annoying! Also, the tasks she does are just meaningless to the plot.
Yes, they are funny. But they didn't grip me. When I read a book, I want to get to a moment in the book and think, 'Ooh! This bit is cool!' Kobato never did that. The only thing I really liked was the artwork, but the terrible story put it down.
In conclusion, I was rather disappointed. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's.
