Here's what Freddie said about the album and his history with Madlib: 'I got the inspiration to do this project from my homeboy Krondon, and Phil Da Agony, and Mitchy Slick - Strong Arm Steady, you know. I saw what they did with Madlib: they kickin' straight street shit, and I was like, 'Damn.' That really inspired me-they really inspired me-to get in the lab with Madlib, to be honest.'
'Madlib already got a huge fan base already, so for me to do it was a no-brainer, pretty much. Once we dropped 'Thuggin,' I think people started to be like, 'Aw shit, I think they got somethin' here.' That was the first song we ever did. I hadn't really rapped on shit like that, and it was, like, a challenge for me lyrically, just to step into his realm of beats and bring my type of shit to it. Things of that nature. So I just took it, and I think I knocked it out the park.'
(from his interviews with Red Bull and Pitchfork).
EDITORS’ NOTES At first glance, the pairing of producer Madlib and rapper Freddie Gibbs seems unlikely. The former is the ultimate crate-digger, known as much for his reclusive tendencies as his endless collection of obscure soul, jazz, rock, and other musical ephemera; the latter is a street-hardened former dealer who rhymes about the perils of the dope game. But they say opposites attract, and in this case their two aesthetics complement one another. Gibbs is a nimble, gifted rapper, his syllables quick-stepping around Madlib's many twists and turns, from the grainy '70s soul-funk of 'Scarface' to the half-time disco of 'Harold's' to the hazy West Coast G-funk of 'Thuggin.'
The duo's credentials are strong enough to pull some of hip-hop's finest into their orbit: oddball Danny Brown contributes a verse to the squirming 'High,' while the crews from The Wu-Tang Clan, Top Dog Entertainment, and Odd Future are all represented (via cameos from Raekwon, Ab Soul, and Earl Sweatshirt, respectively). As a final shot of gravitas, Scarface drops a verse on 'Broken.' It's a deserved blessing from one of hip-hop's finest MCs to one of its most unlikely but successful pairings. In the shop: Freddie Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets, but unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth without inhibition or an exaggerated rap persona. Pinata, a 17-track collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his transparent approach to making music, combining stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer. Pinata is “a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax,” Gibbs says, and the full-length result of a process that began in 2009. It’s an album with a sound that couldn’t be any further from the radio, where, according to the Gibbs, every rapper is Superman, or the dope dealer of the century, who has grinded to the top, never made a mistake and has no chinks in his armor. “I will show you my flaws, I’ll show you what I’ve done wrong and what I’ve fucked up at,” says the native of Gary, Indiana, the former steel town best known for producing Michael Jackson. “I don’t regret shit, but I’ll show you the things I’m not proud of.” Gibbs is joined on Pinata by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries. While this is the latest in a series of single-artist collaborations for Madlib, after Jaylib (J Dilla), Madvillainy (MF Doom) and the street-centric O.J.
Simpson with Detroit’s Guilty Simpson, the pairing is unique as it is the first time for Gibbs working with just one producer. There’s also Madlib’s own self-awareness of his style as a producer. “My stuff, it ain’t fully quantizedit has more of a human feel, so it might slow down or speed up,” he says.

When I first hear Freddie Gibbs I didn’t think he had anything special on him, I actually thought he was just like any average rapper making Trap music until I hear this album. From beginning to end I love this album. I didn’t think that a great album was going to come out in a while since Good Kid M.A.A.D City. Gibbs has a really good flow, intricate lyrics and a special way of telling a story. Madlib did his job producing amazing smooth and soulful beats full of samples and interludes.
